Did you know…
Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener which is about 200 times sweeter than sucrose. It is quite unique among the low-calorie sweeteners for it is entirely divided in the body into individual components - amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. These elements are present in much greater amounts in common food such as meat, milk, fruits and vegetables, and the body uses them in the same way, whether they come from aspartame or common food.
Aspartame was discovered in 1965 by James M. Schlatter, a chemist who worked for GD Searle & Company.
Do you know which sweetener is the best?
Safety of sweeteners is determined by so called ADI value, which defines maximum safe dose of a single sweetener that a person can consume daily without any health risk. ADI values are expressed in milligrams per kg of body weight per day.
